Electric
Epiphone Les Paul
Although this isn't a real 'Gibson' it sure works for me. This has been my main guitar for many years now and fits like a glove. I believe that a lot of the tone you get out of the guitar comes from the player's fingers and their soul. Not the guitar you're playing.
I usually play on the rhythm pickup to get a warm, mellow, rounded sound. I haven't made many changes to it, I replaced one of the volume knobs so that I can create a swell effect with my fingers while playing, a trick I picked up from Geoff Achison.
Acoustic
AJ250 This is my newest guitar. I wanted an acoustic so that I could get a different sound and a different style of playing.
I hadn’t intended on getting an acoustic at the time. I just walked into the shop and asked to try a few acoustics. At first I tried out some 6 strings but nothing was really grabbing me. When I tried this 12 string I had an instant connection with the sound. I asked if I could take it home for a night, so I could have some time to play with it. It was my guitar the next day!
I knew I needed to have this guitar and have been playing and experimenting with it a lot since then.
Amplifier
I have had this amp for around a year now. I originally saw Wolf Mail playing it and loved the clean sound. So when I went on tour with Wolf I had the opportunity to play through this beautiful amp.
I love this amp, it really gets me the kind of sound I want. I use the clean channel and like turn it up to the point where it just starts to get a bit of overdrive as when I turn the volume up on my guitar and play harder.
I have also found that it is very hardy, it has survived many drops down airport chutes. I break into a sweat each time it goes down, but it always ends up being perfectly fine on the other side. It’s a tough amp!
Strings
I use GHS boomers and have worked up to 12 gauge strings. I like the fat
tone that heavier strings give:
12 - 16 - 19 - 28 - 38 - 52
With my acoustic I use D'Addario strings:
EJ39: 12 - 12 - 16 - 16 - 25 - 10 - 32 - 14 - 42 - 20 - 52 - 30
I am usually
tune to standard tuning, but sometimes
play half a step down (Eb)
Picks
Dunlop Gator Grip Standard
2.0mm
Pedals
I do use a Boss TU-2 Tuner though, I use it externally as a tuner only (not in the chain to the amplifier).
